Ashanti Kingdom: The Asantehene visit to the US

His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, The Asantehene visited the United States where he was invited by the United Nations to address the UN General Assembly’s High Level Forum on September 13th 2019, on the topic of culture and peace as well as attend other events pertaining to that.

His Majesty arrived in the country on September 10th, were he was welcomed by Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Prof. Baffuor Adjei-Bawuah, other dignitaries working in Ghana’s embassy in the United States of America and some traditional leaders in Ghana and the US, including Nana Kusi Boadum, Chief of Domeabra, and Nana Asuah Amoako II, Fumesuahene.

Prior to addressing the General Assembly, His Majesty began his visit at the World Banks Head Quarters. He met with senior officials where he discussed the development of projects in Asante land and throughout Ghana.

He later also met with the African Union Representational Mission to the United States to discuss the relevance of engaging the diaspora in Africa’s economic transformative revolution.

On September 12th, He arrived in New York where he first paid a courtesy call on the Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Antonio Guterres at UN Headquarters.

On September 13th, he gave the keynote address marking the 20th Anniversary of the UN General Assembly Resolution 53/243 on the Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture for Peace.

Over the course of his 20 years of reign, the Asantehene has played a key role as not just mediator but as peace negotiator in various conflicts not only in Ghana but in other countries.
