Namibia: Paramount Chief Rukoro of the OvaHerero celebrates his birthday

A happy birthday to the Paramount Chief Vekuii Reinhard Rukoro, Okahandja Herero and Ombara Otjitambi of the ovaHerero(Herero tribe) of Namibia.

The Paramount chief was born on November 11th, and did his primary and secondary education in Namibia. He then left for the United Kingdom, where he studied at the University of Warwick  and graduated with LL.B. Honours, and later at the Washington College of Law, American Universty for a LL.M.

He is a man of many hats, prior to taking the chieftaincy he joined in 1975 the South West Africa National Union (SWANU) and became its secretary-general, left in 1978, but came back to SWANU, and was appointed its secretary-general in 1984, and five years later the party's president in 1989.

He was also the president of Namibia National Front (NNF) in 1989, member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia where he was one of the main drafters of Namibia's Constitution which let to its independence in 1990.

He became the country's Deputy Minister of Justice from 1990-1995. Whilst joining a new political party he served as the country's Attorney-General from 1995-2000.

From 2000 he became the Managing Director for Sanlam Namibia. From 2006-2013, he took the role of Chairman of Air Namibia and C.E.O of First National Bank Namibia. He was appointed to the post of C.E.O of Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) in 2013 and was also appointed Paramount Chief in September 2014.

He was married to the late Queen Meriam Rukoro who passed away in 2017

Info about the Herero people:
They are an ethnic group inhabiting parts of Southern Africa with majority residing in Namibia, and the remainder in neighbouring Botswana and Angola. There were an estimated 250,000 Herero people in Namibia in 2013. They speak Otjiherero, a Bantu language.
