Zambia: Soli Chieftainess continues her fight against early marriages

Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II of the Soli people in Zambia will continue her fight against early childhood marriages in her chiefdom.

In a speech she gave during the Chakwela Makumbi traditional ceremony of the Soli people in Chongwe hosted on October 26th, The Chieftainess warned any parents in her chiefdom that she will be dealing with them seriously if they continue approving marry off a girl child in exchange of wealth instead of sending her to school.

According to Zambian media Diggers News, she explained that the country's high increase in child marriages were retrogressive to the country and community development. She warned every one by saying “Young ones are the great future of this nation, and as a traditional leader, I want to state that my chiefdom has not been spared from early marriages or child marriages. Child marriages are very retrogressive to community development and I, therefore, want to sound a warning to all my people in this chiefdom that I will not spare any parent who will be found marrying a child on the grounds of getting wealth. Let a child be a child and not a dowry.”

She urged the Zambian government to improve the health conditions by building more health centres and increase the funding in all sectors especially the agriculture as this year's yielding hasn't been good.

Traditional leaders from around the country graced the ceremony notable Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people
