A view in African Royal Families

The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Onitsha Kingdom, Anambra State played host to the 2019 edition of Ofala Festival which began on October 4th and ended on October 14th.

His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha hosted thousands of the Kingdom's residents and visitors to not only a display the rich cultural heritage, but 10 days of pure glamourous display of rich entertainment for all.

A few days leading to the festival, the Igwe goes into seclusion where it said and assumed to have successfully negotiated the fortunes of the kingdom with the gods and forefathers. This is steeped into deep spirituality, the event is the highpoint of the Onitsha ceremonial cycle. The night before the event, he emergences and then take part in traditional rites to bless the events.

The ceremony held various events which included the first edition of the  21 km Onitsha City Marathon, organised by the Onitsha Business School, on October 5th. This was followed by the Oreze Arts VII, which was promoted and supported by Igwe Achebe’s Chimedie Museum Trust Foundation and the National Gallery of Art.

There was also the Ofala Youth Festival 7th edition hosted by Onitsha Ado Youth council which was held on Thursday, October 10th which brought about 2000 persons. The festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom.

There was also display of royal dances, tributes, parades and music running which took place over two days. Also known as The Ofala proper, which took place from October 11th and 12th.

The festival ended with a Royal Banquet, organised by one of Nigeria's mobile company and the festival's sponsor Globacom in honour of the Obi of Onitsha held at the Dolly Hills Hotel, Onitsha, on Monday October 14th.

His Majesty King Mswati III visited Mbabane city and its downtown area yesterday October 15th to unveiled two buildings and the statues of HRH Inkhosikati Labotsibeni Mdluli, also known as Queen Gwamile.

The coming of His Majesty to the capital city brought the downtown area to a standstill as many citizens were in joy and happiness to welcome and see their Monarch and Sovereign.

According to media reports, Ingwenyama first visited and unveiled the new Eswatini Development Finance Corporation headquarters building (commonly known as FINCORP) which was revealed to be worth E97 million.

It is said that FINCORP was founded by His Majesty in 1995, and His Majesty toured the new building and was shown the newly installed state of the art facilities and technologies.

His Majesty then proceeded to unveiled the new Hilton Garden Inn Hotel. The building is worth E480 million. He toured the new hotel and used some of the sports equipment at the new gym.

He later went to Municipal Council of Mbabane where he unveiled and launched the statue of Queen Gwamile at the MTN Golf Park.

His Majesty applauded the council for reviving and reminding the country of its rich heritage and its history during the events. He also acknowledge the historical moments at the statue was place on the Queen Gwamile Street.

He stated “This sculpture marks the tribute we have for the hard work of our forebearers through their selfless service to Their Majesties, heirs, descendants and the entire nation. Please continue making this city a tourist destination which lives up to being the true capital city of this great nation.”

He continued by explaining the important role the late Queen played in the ruling of the Kingdom.

He then encourage the city council to work harder to improve service delivery in the city

History:

Queen Gwamile or Inkhosikati Labotsibeni Mdluli is King Mswati III's great-grandmother. She was the wife of Ingwenyama DLAMINI IV and mother of LUDVONGA II(who passed away from poisoning prior to his enthronement).

As Queen Mother, she adopted and raised Ingwenyama Bunu as her son following the death of Ludvonga II who took the name of Ngwane IV after his coronation. As Queen Regent to her young grandson Ingwenyama Sobuhza II, she played an important role in his education by making sure that King Sobhuza II got a formal education against the advice of many who opposed it.

She played an important role in taking the country out of British colonial times which gained its independence under the rule of King Sobhuza II.

Her Royal Highness Princess Gugulethu Mchunu of Mchunu clan, KwaZulu Natal South Africa recently attended the Global Goals Model United Nations 2019. The session took place from October 4th-7th in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand.

A happy birthday to His Imperial Majesty Oba Dr. Lamidi Adeyemi III, Alaafin of Oyo Kingdom.

His Royal Majesty who is celebrating his 81st birthday on October 15th to HRM the late Oba Adeyemi II Adeniran and Olori Ibironke of Epo compound. At his birth, many saw him as a future monarch and taking over the throne due to the lacerations on his left breast and the spots on his legs, which were similar and on the same spots as that of Lamidi Olayiwola.

Prior to taking over the throne from HRM Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II(who succeeded over the Alaafin's father who was deposed and exile), he began his training first was a multiple faith training in Quranic and Christian knowledge, then furthering his royal training at various monarchs' homes, he was to study law in the United Kingdom but a few hours prior to his departures, his father passed away. He then studied insurance and became an insurance executive in Lagos.

In 1968, he was amongst one of 10 princes of the Adeyemi Alowolodo Ruling house to produce the Alaafin following the death of Oba Bello Gbadegesin Ladigbolu after 12 years on the throne. The late Oba hailed from the Agunloye ruling house.

The keen competition did not end until November 18th, 1970, when he was officially pronounced the Alaafin of Oyo at the age of 32 years and was crowned on January 14th, 1971.

Before his ascension to the throne, he was married to two wives, Alhaja Olori Habibat Adeyemi (Iya Dodo) and Alhaja Olori Rahamat Adeyemi (Iya Ile Koto). Through his reign, he is now blessed with other wives, many children and grandchildren. Amongst his children are prominent:

HRH Prince Akeem Adeniyi Adeyemi(Nigeria Federal House of Representative of Afijio, Oyo West, Oyo East, Atiba West federal constituency)

HRH Prince Babatunde Israel Adeyemi(lawyer and pastor also married to Oyo state Supreme court judge HRH Princess and Justice Omolara Adeyemi),

HRH Princess Folashade Adeyemi(CEO of Arewa House of Culture and leader of women in Oyo).

HRH Princess Taibat Adeyemi-Agaba: prominent business woman.

HRH Princess Adetutu Adeyemi-Aigbe: Forming Oyo State commissioner for culture.

HRH Prince Adetona Adeyemi: Also known as Tillaman, prominent musician.

HRH Prince Adebayo Adeyemi: Successful professional photographer in the United Kingdom also known as bambino. And many others


He is the longest serving Alaafin and one of the longest serving first class monarch of Nigeria. He is also on the forefront of peace and security initiatives both in Oyo state and around Nigeria. He supports various initiatives and is patron to others.

His Majesty Ingwenyama presided over the kingdom's Thanksgiving End of Year Church Service hosted at the Mandvulo Grand Hall in Lozitha on Sunday October 13th.

With this year's theme was ‘God has been our strength and refuge’  derived from Psalms 28:7, the church service began with a prayer and then the choir singing lead by Nothando Hlophe before His Majesty gave his speech.

Emakhosikati, Emazinyane and members of the royal family were in attendance.

His Majesty then address the crowd and nation explaining how the pledge at last week's Global Fund came to be about. His Majesty explained that it was God who planted and revealed that the US$ 6 million (which is approximately E91 million) pledge in his mind while he was attending the Sixth Global Fund Replenishing Conference. He then continued saying that He(God) would assist the country make good of the pledge and provide more than the amount.

He further reiterated that while he was busy mulling over the country's current economic situation, where the economy was not in a good position with strikes in the public service. “I asked myself if I could also make a commitment. Whilst still meditating,  a figure was planted into my mind. I did not discuss it with anyone. Then I made up my mind that since that figure had already been planted, I should go ahead and make the pledge as it was not a mistake,”. 

“I hadn’t planned on any figure; I was actually confused as other countries were making their pledges. This means that God had planned it. Some wonder and some even asked where that amount will come from but I assured them that it will be available knowing that our God provides and He is with me. God said we should prophecy things and it will manifest, life and death are in the power of the tongue,” he said.

The service ended with a banquet dinner.


Meeting with new High Commissioners and Ambassadors:

Yesterday, His Majesty received and accepted the letter of credence from five new envoys from countries around the world to begin their diplomatic work in Eswatini.

The new envoys came from: Kuwait, Japan, Indonesia, UAE and India

Whilst her son Ingwenyama returned to the Kingdom after attending Global Fund conference, Her Majesty Ndlovukati Ntfombi, Queen mother of the Kingdom was departing at Matsapha International Airport for the Republic of South Africa.

Her daughters in law Their Royal Highness Emakhosikati LaMatsebula, LaNgangaza, LaMahlangu, LaNtentesa and grandchildren Emaziyane Sikhaniyso, Temaswati accompanied by others princes and princesses were at the airport to see her off.

According to reports, Her Majesty is traveling for medical check ups
